Dew Claws

Maddy still has her dew claws. She is going to be spayed tomorrow and I´m wondering whether I should ask the vet to remove her dew claws at the same time. I´ve directed this question to Cat but I´m probably a bit late posting it and not sure if she´ll be able to respond in time, so thought I´d ask PS members for their thoughts. Do any of you out there have dogs with dew claws, and have they had problems with them getting injured?

All my dogs kept their dew claws and as long as you keep them cut back to a decent length they do not cause any problems, and yes they do use them as thumbs for holding things, funny to watch them eating a carrot for example. Glad Maddy is well after her op, its always a worry..

Probably for the best as they are usually removed when the pups are roughly 1 week old, if they not given her any problems before I doubt that they will now or on the future xx

Had a discussion with my vet this morning and decided not to have Maddy´s dew claws removed. Vet said the dew claws on the front legs are a bit like our thumbs with bone so removal involves cutting through the bone, so although it´s not a major procedure it´s not as simple as I´d thought. The dew claws on the hindlegs are made of cartilage which is why they are floppy, but also much simpler to remove.

Mine are very close but keep having to cut the nail short as that can get caught and be painful.

Yes, that is what I´m thinking Vena. Millie doesn´t have any, but then she is working bred springer so has 3/4 dock and dew claws removed, but also can´t think of any other dogs I know who have them. Had meant to ask my vet about this last week when I went to book Maddy in, but of course I forgot.

jax as none on his back legs but as them on front we have never wanted to have them removed and as vena says they dont appear to flop but i agree with vena if maddy is going under now is as good as any time .

lve never taken off front ones as they don´t seem to flop as much, but as she is going under anyway it might be best to have it done now rather than later if she does damage them .
