Dog CullsOn January 6th 2012 news broke that the 2006 Sri Lankan Presidential No Kill Policy for dogs could be about to be revoked , returning the country to a policy of killing stray , street and roaming dogs as a method of population and Rabies control. Links to news stories English & Sinhala Over the next few days Dogstar liaised with colleagues in WSPA and a number of other Sri Lankan and international animal welfare groups, stakeholders and individuals to discuss practical ways of preventing the resumption of culls On Monday 9th January Dogstar attended a joint meeting of Animal Welfare stakeholders in Columbo and we were all relieved to hear that the news later that day that Goverment officials had confirmed there was no cull planned. Links to news story in English No one wants to see a cull but we all accept there are areas where the entire and unvaccinated canine population is causing risks and suffering for both animals and people. Whilst practical national longer term solutions are developed Dogstar will continue to promote humane population control by providing high standard surgical sterilisation and rabies control measures by vaccination and the education of communities in animal husbandry and bite prevention. Emergency Sirius 500 Clinic for March / April 2012 Although we don’t have the full funding in place we cannot afford to wait , this clinic will sterilise and vaccinate a minimum of 500 animals. We will extend an open invite to local officials or individuals who wish to visit our clinic and view our work in order that we can demonstrate why we believe that this is the most practical , humane and cost effective way to use funding to reduce the number of unwanted animals and prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases such as Rabies and prevent suffering for the entire communities You can support our response to the threat of dog culls by donating today to the Sirius 500 Appeal We are looking for amazing people to help Dogstar It was just 2 weeks ago we feared their might be a return to culling street dogs , thankfully this has been averted but the underlying problems and concerns about street dogs especially in larger towns remains and we have to step up and do even more. Dogstars trustees have made the bold decision to bring forward the 2012 Sirius 500 Clinic by 6 months and it will start in just 7 weeks time. Although we don’t have all the funding in place we simply cannot afford to do nothing . We need to act now whilst the issues are fresh we will be providing high quality CNVR with an open invite to any officials or interested parties to come and see how its done see that high standard don’t have to man high costs.
