Hi Jacky,

It is really difficult to know why your cat is messing in your house away from his litter tray, it could be for many reasons.

The first thing to do is rule out any medical issues, such as cystitis or colitis, which is making him go when he has to rather than waiting for the right time or place. Your vet will be able to examine him and help you decide this, as well as being able to discuss other causes for the problem with you.

The second thing to consider are behavioural problems and these can be sometimes challenging to sort out without a detailed discussion of your household. Behavioural reasons for inappropriate toileting can include; litter trays being in the wrong place (for example very exposed so the cat doesn´t want to use them), or not being cleaned out regularly enough (especially if you hae more than one cat) or the type of litter used is not favoured by the cat. Cats will use both urine and faecal marking to establish their territories, especially if they feel threatened or insecure. Again, this can be triggered by both tensions between cats living in the same house or another cat from outside, especially if they are coming into your home (a common senario if biscuits are left down all the time!)

The best thing to do is to take him to your vet to be examined and also to discuss any possible behavioural issues at the same time.
