Nearly 5 weeks ago Twig had a operation to correct a condition
whereby her knee was dislocating, only occasionally, but me and my vet
decided that it had got to the point where she was going to benefit
from the surgeryI thought id write a bit about this for
anyone else who might be going through the same or for anyone whos
looking to buy a toy breed and can be passed down, dogs with a patella
luxation should never be bred from, and in my opinion if you are
considering breeding your toy dog you should have your bitch and dog
tested for this condition.I first noticed this happen when she
was about 6 months old, and my vet referred us to a specialist and they
graded the knee as 1 (there are 4 grades, with 4 being the most
serious) at that time there was no benefit to be gained by having the
surgery which involved making a groove in her femur so the patella
could sit in the correct place, but early this year i noticed her
limping a little more often and back to the vets we went, her leg was
subsequently graded as a 2 and we were advised surgery would now be an
option which we could do now or anytime in the next year or so for it
to be successful. So i opted for now, and it was really
hard leaving her to be taken to the orthopedic vet in London by my vet
as he was supposed to come to my practice but couldn't at the last
minute. The first few days home were quite distressing and i really
did wonder more than once if i made the right choice to put her through
this, my vets were great and kept ringing up to check on her and
answering all the questions i had. After 2 days we went into the vets
to get her dressing changed and so they could check her, 10 days after
and her incision had completely healed, and now we are on weekly
appointments to check her progress - they expect her recovery to take
6-8 weeks. For the rest of her life Twig will be on
Chrondroitin and Glucosamine Joint supplements and they still expect
her to get arthritis in her affected leg just later in life than if she
hadnt had the operation.I noticed a few weeks ago there was a letter in Our Dogs about a chihuahua breeder that knowingly has PL in
her lines and continues to breed [:(] i would love to see the KC bring
in some sort of compulsory testing for this condition - hopefully it
would save alot of pain and money for the dogs and people who buy
puppies from these peopleMy vets awarded Twig
a "Braveheart" award for being such a brave patient, and they have her
pic on the wall with a description of her condition, and she got a
medal and a certificate

Last Wednesday (23 Jan) Twig had an operation to correct what is called a Luxating Patella, this is when the knee cap slips from the position its supposed to be in and so the leg sticks out - this is a very common problem in small breeds and very often is hereditary :( the operation is a very complex one and took 1 and a half hours and was carried out by a specialist vet and my own practice vet. I will be writing about Twig's experience of this and how awful and painful it has been for her :( i hope that anyone who breeds their dog who has this condition takes a second thought as to what they may be inflicting on the next generation :(

Hi Twiglet,
I hope you had fun at the park?
Mummy keeps saying that I am going for my 'gilry operation' next week. She says I'll be ok but we are both a bit worried.
Are operations really that bad? The general aneasthetic sounds really scary.

Hi Twiggy,
Did you have a nice weekend?
Was it too cold for you to go to the park or did you venture out?
I was out with Mummy and my big sister Bingkey to a doggy meet up at Battersea Park. We are members of 4/5 different dog walking group but this was out first meet up. It went really well, the weather held out nicely on Saturday. I was a chilyl chi on Sunday though! What do you make of the snow?
Hope you had fun
