The Aquatic Scaleys

The front pond shoal,lost one of their members last night......the pretty red and white patched fish,had been a little off colour for a few days and was found cloudy-eyed this morning on the surface.
Of course,cause of death is unknown as fish can suddenly be found floating on their sides,either breathing slowly in short gasps or just not breathing at all.Age may have been a contributing factor,but as the age was unknown,this cannot be deemed as a definate cause.There was no sign of illness,no lumps,no swim bladder problems and he looked relatively well and in fine fettle and of a good weight,so there you go,it´s one of life´s little mysteries,within the fish world.

So now the front pond shoal are down to just 5 and all appear quite well and have weathered the winter,which has been surprisingly mild and we´ve had no ice on either of the ponds,all winter.....for the first time ever.
They are all starting to come up to the surface now,as spring sunshine filters through the budding tree branches,but as we still have the odd frost at night,they are not allowed any food as yet,but it won´t be long now and they seem to sense it.
Oh well,let´s hope we suffer no more losses from either pond and that spring suddenly burst´s through with the promise of a very fine summer !!.

Blub,blub,blub,blub & blub!.

It´s December and the weather has suddenly gone from warm and mild to wet,very windy and now frequently cold.
Our pump has now been turned off for the winter duration as our oxygen intake has decreased with nature and our bodies kind of shut down,so we hang around near to the bottom more now and have long since stopped being fed fish food.
If we get a bit peckish,we just feed off of the grubs that land on the pond´s surface or crawls though along the plant foliage but basically we have all slowed up now and are taking it easy.

We surface when the warm wintry sun is upon our backs and laze around for a bit but now,when the weather is colder and wetter,we sink low and stay snug,in our kind of fishy way.
Roll on the Spring,when the temperature gradually warm´s our water,the sun is out for longer and feel´s stronger and the frogs lay their spawn in our plants.......nothing better than a good tadpole feast,as you regain body condition after the long winter.
Best bit too,is when our pump get´s switched back on and we can frolic and splash in the waterfall,which helps to remove any unwanted parasites and make´s us feel generally good.

Hello fishies!

Aaaaargh... I am orange with jealousy - what a super pond! I used to live in a pond, but now we live in a flat so I only got an aquarium. Sadly my 2 friends who used to live in the pond with me died when we moved... maybe of sadness of not being in the pond anymore?

Now I got BananaBoat to keep me company. He's Ok, but I still miss my old pals. Momma says that one day I'll be back in the pond again, and she's promised that me and BB can have other friends then too.
