Serena was the most fun dog I ever knew and it was as if she realised that her entire existence needed to be packed into as short a time possible. She was highly strung, but with an IQ rarely displayed in animals. This dog opened the cupboard door on the landing where she found a box filled with Christmas Crackers. Whilst I was working downstairs in the kitchen I heard a lot of bangs and each time I looked around, there was Serena, whistling to herself, innocently looking up at the ceiling. I shrugged my shoulders, assuming I must have left the TV on playing some ghastly Western movie. The 'shooting' continued and after a while I was convinced I had not left the TV on at all. Serena was innocently sitting downstairs and I decided to check it out. The entire Master bedroom, which was not used at that time, clearly showed that someone had celebrated one heck of a party with party hats scattered around and toys, some broken, with fortune cookies etc. She was something alright Serena. I was inconsolable after her death, but the person whose car hit her, kindly dropped her at a Police Station, some distance from my home. She died instantly.Buried on the 21st December in the garden after another tragic incident with a cat who passed away on the 19th, but that I shall leave for another time. As I walked back indoors Mum had started her season and so it became that she was mated somewhat late in life, deciding to go into labour on the couch, in the same room where Serena held her solo party, March 5th early morning, standing by as the mid-wife, Isadora fell into my hands, 2nd in the litter. From my earliest memory I decided to name her after Isadora Duncan the famous artiste who died such a tragic death, being choked by her own scarf in Cannes, attending a party, after many years of solitude coming to terms with her grief. It seemed the appropriate name for my 'chosen' pup out of a litter of 6/7. Two girls Black Beauty and Isadora through various circumstances I also ended up with Beauty, but again, that is for a later date. This is about Isadora. Contra to Serena who was the life and soul at any party, a real life wire, Izzy OTOH was so totally the opposite. Snail paced and totally laid back, she took her time with everything and I knew she would be around for a long time. The day I took her upstairs, only a few weeks old, I lied on the bed keeping her on my chest, I knew this dog would break my heart when the day of parting would arrive and so it was that 14 remarkable years of my life with Isadora began. She was as cute as a button (to phrase the late Jim Cronin from Monkey World). When Isadora grew up, she soon learned the art of showing off and jumping over the fence to pinch cookies baked by my neighbour, who was equally enamoured with her and named her Dizzy, for she was so excited, she ran around like a canon ball. Sandy, my neighbour, had a violent husband and time and time again, she' d jump over the fence, seeking refuge in my garden, holding the baby. At that time the fence was waist high. One night, Izzy was barking violently! Evidently Sandy had been locked into a van and her husband kicked the living daylights out of her, broke her nose amongst other things. Isadora's incessant barking made him stop, because he wanted to make sure no one saw what was happening in his truck. It gave Sandy the opportunity to flee and Isadora thus saved her life. A year of so later, the shock activated a tumour in Sandy's brains and she needed to go in for surgery. Just as she went in for the operation of opening her skull, her husband text a message saying he had taken the boys and she would never see them again. It turned out alright for Sandy in the end and she is now living somewhere with her two boys and family, at an address unbeknownst to that brute. Time rolled on and Isadora took to training like a duck to water. She loved her classes and the trips to school. Her beauty was remarkable and she ended up on the front cover of Dog's Today April 2001. She wasn't just protective and every entire dog's pin-up, but Isadora was smart and with a mind of her own. When she was still in her teenage years and I would call her in a 'stern' voice, she'd raise the unseen proverbial two finger sign and walk away. Most indignant. No Izzy wanted to be treated with love and respect. It was thus that the seeds were sown, more specifically, about the dignity of all living beings. Isadora was a most obedient dog, but unlike Faithful, my youngest to date, Izzy would teach me a thing or two and when she was not in the mood, I could take a running hike. She discovered all manner of games and the most favourite was using Mummy i.e. me as the Family Trampoline. She discovered this game somewhat later in life and was joined in with not only Beauty but the rest of the gang that followed, after Beauty decided to invite a young lad full pedigree Corgi to do the honours on my bed. Isadora turned out to be the perfect auntie and close relations developed between her and Celeste, but also Wessex and Faithful. Isadora tolerated the cats, but unlike Beauty who would suckle them, she never bonded with them, she did however bond with the youngsters from the next litters. At school Isadora was a star. She learned quick and one day when left in the car, there was a heavy knock on the door whilst teaching Celeste. It sounded like a big man knocking on the door and all pupils, teachers and dogs alike, looked up when the door opened, only to lower our heads, for there stood Isadora. She managed to open the sunroof with the swivel handle, jump out and said 'I'm not having this, being left out here on my own'. She wanted to join the class and so she did. These are just some of the remarkable characteristics of Isadora who jumped out of the kitchen window, ate the cat food and would take herself for a walk, when left by herself to baby-sit the others. No, that was too dog like and she wanted to be where the people were. Especially where Mummy was. My home fortunately is positioned in such a way that no harm can come to her and the neighbours always seemed to keep a look out to ensure nothing would happen to Izzy or Beauty. The one time when Isadora was set up with a suitable male for mating, the greatest disappointment ever experienced, this entire male was as impotent as they come. He just didn't know what to do with it and neither would his rather large British Pride stand up. Izzy didn't like the smaller type males as she would stand up, unlike Beauty who would oblige any hot male making himself available. Even at age 12 Beauty still jumped over a 6 ft tall fence. Up to age 10 Isadora was given the opportunity with the help from an excellent vet, to have her own litter, but sadly it was not meant to be. Faithful who carries her essence is the baby of Celeste and she will be next in line, I hope, to provide me with a somewhat downsized replacement for Isadora. On the 6/6/07 Izzy was diagnosed with a heart murmur and at first we tried the homeopathic path, but it became evident that only Vetmedin could prolong her life, which it did when she collapsed Sunday morning 12/08/07. Just like her character in play acting, dogs do not die on Sundays or Festive Seasons, for no one is around to help. None of the local vets, shelters not even the RSPCA would come to our rescue. I had no alternative but to let her go. She died as she came into this world, in my arms, looking me straight in the eyes. I shall spare the Neanderthal reactions coming from my inner being and move on to the offering of a Ceremonial Buddhist Prayer to a now empty body. Whilst chanting in front of my home, where she collapsed just before a wall next to the green verge, a prayer filled 1 Comments My Message Wall 07 Nov 2009 00:03 I am so very sorry for your loss xxxx 04 Mar 2008 18:26 Hi thank you for your kind message if you need any help with the website just ask how are u and the gang lately love to hear from you again soon.love megan n star 17 Feb 2008 12:01 hey im so sorry to hear of your loss i set up a new group called all dogs go to heaven its all about coping with the death of a pet of any kind so why not join and look up some of the tips and poems and pass on the informationxxlove star and megan ps: hope your doing well | |
