My Name is Chrissie and I have worked at Birmingham Dogs Home since May 2006.
I'm a kennel hand responsible for a block of 14 dogs. My job consists of cleaning out kennels, feeding, grooming and bathing dogs. I also have to administer medication if perscribed by the vet.
I love my job because I get to work with my favourite type of animal and I get a lot of fulfilment rehoming the stray dogs. I have to say the best part of my day is when one of my dogs from my block is going to its new home, walking it to reception after being bathed and groomed and seeing it walking out of the home with the proud new owners.
The stray dog you can see in the picture with me I named Harvey and I fell in Love with him because when he arrived he was very nervous and he wasn't very friendly. After spending time with him he turned out to be a really lovely sweet dog. Harvey has now gone to a loving new home.
If your considering a career as a kennel hand like myself, I will tell you that it is a very rewarding job and it's great when strays are reunited with their owners or rehomed to a loving new home.
There are alot of highs to this job as well as lows. I would say job highs are rehoming a stray dog to a loving home, owners coming and claiming their lost family pet and I also particularly enjoy working on vet's duty. Job lows include when an owner doesn't put a tag on their dogs collar, or have it micro-chipped, when owners sign their dogs over because they don't want them anymore, and the most upsetting part of the job, seeing a dog that has suffered at the hands of a human (Neglected) and when a seriously ill dog has to be put to sleep by the vet.
I would definitely say this job is for an animal lover 100% but definitely not the for the faint hearted
