I completely agree. If you can´t afford a pet you should not be allowed to own one, no one should expect a charity or anyone else to pay for their animal. Know matter how much you think you love your pet that isn´t enough to justify other people paying for it.

Stevie - Dawn is a vet nurse - she has never pretended to be anything else - don´t be hard on her. You are absolutely right to say how important pets are in people´s lives - but pets like dogs do cost a lot of money to look after - the food, the vaccinations, the vet´s bills. Owning a dog is not a right anymore (if it ever was) but a privilage. I am sorry but there is no National Health Service for pets.

So Dawn Peacock, who claims to be a vet, thinks only the rich should own dogs. Whoever loves dogs should be able to own one. The problem is that both the RSPCA and the PDSA have abandoned the poorer members of society. There are no charity vets in our area any longer so I am having to pay £35 just for an annual injection. What whould it be if my dog should be injured in a road accident? The poor need the company of a cat or dog just as they always did, and they would aften rather feed their pet than themselves. Bring back the days of my youth when everybody I knew was classed as poor but I never met anyone who was cruel to an animal. I think if more children could be brought up with a pet as I was then, they would realise the love which can be given by an animal, and I doubt any of them would grow up to treat a animal cruelly. Bring back the charity money boxes.

deedeeworf - I looked at the website coverage of the RSPCA handling of a cruelty case. Sadly nothing surprised me. It´s a story I have heard many, many times. This interview with the RSPCA vet is, I suspect, the tip of the iceberg of his exasperation - and not just with certain members of the dog-owning community. I will now look for the Editor´s interview with the RSPCA to see if he was able to raise some of the points Petstreet members raised.

I agree, with him on everything especially the bsl. I hate it. Dogs of any breed are what we make them, I´ve met many perfectly nice rottweilers, dobermans (I owned a dobie x alsatien once and he was the most obedient and non-aggressive dog ever). It´s irresponsible dog breeders and/or bad dog owners that create bad dogs, the breed itself isn´t bad...

Too true, see it in my practice all the time. A dog is a luxury, if you can´t afford one, don´t get one.

I suggest all of you look at this web site and read the piece about Spike and Sasha and the RSPCA s response to someone trying to get these poor dogs taken away from the dreadful life they are leading. I appreciate that the RSPCA have lots of cases and few inspectors but I would suggest that its time they sorted this out once and for all. The website is www.germanshepherdrescue.co.uk. The link is about half way down the page and is entitled The RSPCA deem the way these dogs were treated as acceptable. Read the letters of response from the RSPCA

How heartbreaking. Poor David looks as if he´s really suffering too, as well as the poor animals.
Wish I could bring them all home with me.
RSPCA obv doing as much as they can-but how low has society sunk?
