I did think about the boundaries thing at the time. We've been okay since but I still feel unsure about the next 10 years! He has been neutered and I don't know much about his life, he is 5 and was originally picked up by the dog wardens as a stray, he was rehomed through the Dogs Trust to a woman for 6 months, he was returned when he bit her boyfriend, they thought he had grabbed his collar when he was barking at the door and it was redirected aggression. I've never seen him do re-directed aggression, it is usually intentional but I think a lot of it may be fear based. I'm finding that I can put in lots of training and we get along fine then when he is on the lead some dog owners have let their dogs attack him and this just puts him back on the defensive all the time. I ask them to put their dog on a leash as I don't know how mine will re-act but they tend to think their dog is fine and an attack occurs because Fred is on his guard and cannot escape on the leash so they pick up his energy and lunge at him, it's really scary and I usually end up the one who is hurt. I wish the owners would help me to break it up as I pull Fred back but they keep lunging forward. If he was calm around dogs he wouldn't create the atmosphere that causes them to attack. I've had him off the leash when the coast is clear and with some dogs and owners I know he is okay with and if I see someone unfamiliar he always comes to me to have his leash put back on so there is potential but I don't know how to nurture it. I haven't been able to get hold of a behaviourist yet but will be pursuing that. I need to exhaust every avenue before I give up as I've never given up on a pet before. Hope your Dad has some advice, the more the merrier. 20 Apr 2008 01:51 Hi Tori, thanks for your book tips, I am grasping at straws just now. That info is appreciated. You'll see from my recent blog the problems we are facing so experienced advice is so important. I am actually considering giving up Fred and that makes me feel so bad but I know it won't happen because I wouldn't be able to do that but our life is not good just now and I am looking for ways to change it. I would love Fred to relax around other dogs and know that I am actually his friend but don't know how to get this through to him. 16 Apr 2008 18:21 Hi Tori... Thanks for your message!...Yes Lilli is much better now, she sadly has become a bit more of an indoor cat since her attack though (It saddens me as she used to love to be out & about....but whatever makes her feel happy and safe thses days is fine by me...even if it does mean we have to look around her tail that falls across the screen when she lays on top of it for the heat all eveing lol!!!) Your animals are lovely (& I especially love the profile pic on Princess Pussywillow's page haha!!!) :-) Id like to see that youtube vid of the angry tort lol!...if you manage to find the link...post it on my page! :-) Talk to you again soon. DD.xxx 16 Apr 2008 12:46 I am slightly addicted. I only intended to get one but they had to be sold together. I'm really glad I got them. 13 Apr 2008 02:56 oh my god, you had me in peals of laughter at the turtle nappy comment! you can't be serious! she/he sleeps with her turtle?! i can't actually get over how funny that is - maybe it's because i'm super tired and more prone to the giggles :P ugh, now that i've seen your page i feel it would be lazy not to put up my chihuahua (he lives abroad with my dad) and my 2 remaining guineas...thanks for the kick up the bum! look forward to hearing from you again. x 13 Apr 2008 02:30 thank you very much! he's actually a seal point, he may look slightly lilac because of the quality of the photographs. i am quite obsessed with him and i cuddle him to sleep every night (hope that doesn't sound creepy). he's the nicest cat i've owned. seriously, how many pets do you have?! i recently owned 9 guinea pigs but have given the babies away. i'm not sure about the snail type things you have, my boyfriend once stuck one on my back (on the skin) and i was pretty damn scared and grossed out. i suppose the antennas are kind of cute though. if you ever hear about siamese kittens on offer, TELL ME PLEASE!!! actually any kittens for that matter as Matisse needs a friend. x | My Human Friends 6 Friends You must log in to ask or accept friendship. |
