Can you support our Vets Get Scanning Appeal?

Dear All at Petstreet,
I have been invited on to this web site to help raise awareness to Dog Theft.
Widget and Gizmo were stolen from my car in May last year and if it wasn't for the publicity we received because of my father, I would still be looking for my dogs.  Both dogs were sold to the unsuspecting public who would have taken the dogs to the vet.  As they are both microchipped you would expect that being new clients into a new vet that they would be scanned but NO, we were told VETS DON'T SCAN!.
Since starting our appeal VETS GET SCANNING we have discovered other unbelievable facts that as a dog owner you can't understand, the lack of support is shocking.
Please take a look at our web side and please sign our petiton and pass the info on.  We need all the help we can get.
This is the only way stolen, sold, microchipped dogs will get back home!  There are thousands of heartbroken owners suffering from this dreadful crime and not getting the help they deserve.

Thank you for you time.

Support you on this 100%. My dog was stolen and I never got her back. When I went round all the vets in the South East all of them said they dont scan animals for micro chips. The only time they will scan is if you come into the vets and say you have found the dog and you are trying to find its owner. So I will be signing and passing on the info, and if I can help in any other way please let me no.

I have just signed your petition and will be downloading the vet letter and get it to my vet.

It´s certainly ridiculous that vets will carry out microchipping but don´t routinely scan dogs coming into their surgery - seems like a no-brainer to me.

However, I just want to add, recently I learnt (from another website) that a microchip does not prove ownership of a dog. If one wants to be able to prove ownership legally, the dog must be tattooed, and this is something I´m now looking into for my dog.

Delighted to say my vet practice does. But agree it is a worthwhile campaign. Mary Giles

I will gladly sign your petition. The information you have shared is interesting as I have been tracking a lost cat (who is microchipped) using animal communication (see my page for more info). The cat has informed me that she is now living with a new owner who found her after a car accident but she wants to return home. I informed the original owner of this who was confused as she assumed that any vet who found an injured cat would check for the microchip - but clearly it is not always as straightforward as that. I'll pass the info and the petition link on.

I think this is a great campaign - i really hope it makes an impact this is something i have felt very strongly about for a long time- i have placed a link to your website on the front page of mine.

Good luck and i really hope a lot of vets take this on board!

What a great campaign! I had no idea vets didn't routinely scan for microchips - in fact I'm shocked. I've told every pet owner I know to sign the online petition.
