The Harness

I ordered a harness off my wholesaler today, thought I'd better try the goods before I start to sell them!  I tried it on Daz first and he was quite puzzled as to what I was doing and quite rightly as I'd put it on upside down!  It got me all in a tizzy as he was wriggling and I couldn't work out which bit went where but we got there eventually and he wandered around sporting his new 'item' lol, he looked quite proud.  Anyway after giving him a time to get used to it I took him up to the field to see if he could pull, but as he doesn't really pull anyway it was a lovely walk.  Daz has been a joy to train and is one of those dogs who always look up at you to check he's doing the right thing.  The only real problem I have with him is his 'vocality'.  He barks and barks.. and barks, and if I tell him to stop he does - and starts 'vocalising' for the want of a better expression!  Not quite barking but not whining.. somewhere inbetween - it really comical at times.  It's a bit odd trying to sort this out as he usually barks for a reason - one of the other dogs has taken his chew, Jeff the old greyhound is staring at him (Jeff is good at that) and he doesn't like it, Jeff is in the doorway and won't let him past, so you see he has a reason to bark it's just that the other dogs don't take any notice of him!  Just now I'm using the dog whistle to call him to me to stop him barking but that doesn't solve the problem, just puts it off for a while!  Ah well I suppose I'll just have to keep sorting out whatever he's barking for - the sooner he realises he can take his chew back or walk past Jeff the better!

Ah I digressed.. back to the harness.  I then put the said harness on Spindle, a little quicker this time as I had an idea how to do it.  Once again I waited a while until he was used to it before taking him for a walk.  He's not as good as Daz on the lead though but he still couldn't really pull so I'm quite impressed.  I can't get him to the 'all eyes on me' stage but I'm sure it'll come.  What I need is a treat that he just can't ignore as the ones that my other dogs like don't seem to tempt him as much.  He has really settled a lot in the last few days.  He's more of a border collie than Daz so I think he need to feel that he's doing something rather than just playing.  I got three plastic cups today and put little holes in the top then let them both watch me put a treat under one of them then left them to find which one the treat was under.  I was good fun watching them work it out!

Anyway, enough for this blog - don't want to tire your eyes out!
