Certain breeds, just as Labradors, Collies and GSD´s are more prone to the problem, but most old dogs will suffer to some extent. Arthritis is inflammation of the joints. The joints most commonly affected are the hips, elbows and stifles (knees) but it can occur anywhere in the body. Dogs with arthritis may show some of the following symptoms; * Lameness or limping, especially after exercise * Difficulty getting up from lying down * Stiffness, especially after resting * Sleeping more * Less interested in playing or tires easily * Hesitant to climb stairs or jump onto or off the sofa * Difficulty standing or walking on slippy floors * Weight gain * Personality changes, becoming more withdrawn or grumpy. If you are concerned about your pet, take them to the vets and discuss your concerns. Athritis can be easily diagnosed by the vet examining your dog, or taking x-rays. There are many different medications and supplements available to treat arthritis. It is also possible to perform surgery on very badly affected joints. Medication does tend to be life long, but it is very safe and not all dogs need it on a daily basis. Supplements including Cod Liver Oil, Glucosamine and Chondroitin can all help soothe sore joints and possibly lower the amount of medication a dog may need. Acupuncture and Hydroptherapy (swimming) are also used to great affect. Arthritis is very common, the majority of senior dogs will suffer to some extent. However, it is easy to control the pain of arthritis with medication, supplements and lifestyle changes. Hvae a chat to your vet about how you could help your older pets.
