Childhood Fears

This is a Fear of something from childhood which you still carry around as an adult.
As a girl my grandparents would visit on a weekend & stay overnight as a treat my Mam Dad & Grandad would go to the bingo & Nana would stay with me.
Nana & i would watch a programme called Armchair thriller which was quite scary in parts but i loved it & was allowed to stay up to watch it.
Problem was if i needed the loo in the break i was too scared to go upstairs on my own so Nana would have to escort me to the toilet then wait for me outside than escort me back.
Unfortuanatly this has followed me into adulthood & as much as i love the scary movies Ian then has to be my toilet escort this is v embarrssing at my age but i can´t shake off the feeling of dread at the foot of the stairs after watching a scary film.

I woud be interested to know if anyone else has any strange childhood fears ??

when i was a small child growing up in the bay area in california, i remember the very first time i was ever REALLY scared, and it carries over to this day, there was a serial killer loose known as ´THE ZODIAC KILLER", and the community was terrified, he had no pattern, everything was so random, and there were very little clues, on top of that, he was craving attention, so he was taunting the police through the news media and television, so it was always the lead story on the news. to see the grownups so scared...my father was a tough man... and he was nervous.. that made me very afraid... terrified...i NEVER saw my father afraid of anything.. so this guy must be a monster !!! well.... they never caught the zodiac killer...and to this day, when i here the word "zodiac".... even in a astrological sence...i get.... at least for a brief moment...a little afraid, and remember what it felt like to be a scared and helpless child.

Diane, I´m terrified of gas masks too! My mum showed me one when I was tiny and I totally freaked out! I´m the same still. I remember an episode of Dr Who with the ghost of a boy from the war who was looking for his mum. That chap who played Victor Meldrew was in it.....
It was horrible. Every person the creepy little boy touched, their face turned into an empty gas mask...! Chilling!

Yes I do! When I was three, living in Dundee, my brother four, our parents were acting in a play, so we had some babysitters. We played this silly game as we got into our bunkbeds. The girls would pull the sheet up over our faces, and when they pulled it down, they would be wearing a silly hat or wig that they found in the attic. One girl pulled the sheet up to my face and when she pulled it down, I came face to face with a...WW2 gasmask! Not the sort of thing to show a child! It was black, rubber, with small eyeholes, and a long ribbed tube and filter box at the bottom. I went crazy! I even hallucinated dozens of gasmasks jumping up to attack me! Even going to my cousins house, they had a shower fitment above the bath taps, with the ribbed tube and I freaked, thinking that was like the gasmask. When I´ve had operations through the years, including the gall bladder removal in 2005, I´ve been in a state over the anaesthetic room, incase I have a black rubber mask on my face or even LOOK at one! I tense up and can´t breathe when I see a fire engine, or hear the fire alarm, because the firemen wear their breathing apparatus. I´m 45!
I watched a video recording of a nanny course I did in Oz, but before looking through the camera, the guy had to remove the eyepiece. Guess what it was made of: yes, black rubber! A hot water bottle needs a cover on it!
