There is a lane which is used as a ´rat run´ by local drivers but it runs between 2 ponds. At this time of year, toads are crossing from one pond to the other to mate & are an easy target for the cars sooooooo, the locals organise ´toad patrol´ & go out at dusk with buckets, pick the toads up & carry them safely across the road... (It isnt only toads. There are frogs as well and, occasionally, newts too.). Over 3 weeks, there are literally hundreds helped in this way. Then later on, it´s all done in reverse. Helping them BACK across the road from their breeding pond... 18 Mar 2010 16:53 i saw a froggie in the middle of the road this morning ...it was dead it had already been run over ... does that mean someone has a pond near by and thats what it was going to ? 18 Mar 2010 16:44 The frogs have been busy overnight - there are four more clumps of spawn in the pond now. Please, if you have lots of frogspawn, dont ever be tempted to put it in a wild pond ´to help the native population´... Because you might be transferring disease without realising it..... I was going to do that a few years ago & mentioned it to a Ranger at the Water Park & got a right b********g..!! I saw his point but he could have been a bit more, er, polite about it..!!! lol 18 Mar 2010 15:55 The blue tits have moved back into my house - spring is here in my garden!!!! 17 Mar 2010 12:52 M mmmmm not as such .. but as for getting married i d rather chew nails heeeeee xxxx 16 Mar 2010 10:50 Gerraway Noo......bet you´ve kissed WORSE than frogs in your life....lol 15 Mar 2010 23:36 Sounds like Spring really IS on the way. I took pics also lol 15 Mar 2010 15:30 LMFAO @ charlotte and the getting marrid frogs ... i nearly fell off my chair laughing 15 Mar 2010 12:47 Thanks for the info Alison. I will cut them back as soon as frosts are over - probably should have done it at the end of last summer, but there you go!! 15 Mar 2010 08:36 We have crocus and snow drops, daffodil flower buds. Our clematis has new buds (Rourkey - old growth stays brown) my aquilegia has leaves appearing same for my bleeding heart and bluebells. I’ve seen butterflies and a wasp flying about and all the ducks are in pair on the lake where I walk the dog. 15 Mar 2010 07:51 I have 2 clematis at the back of the garden that are completely brown and look dead...I´m not that hopeful for these two but don´t want to prune until I´m sure we´ve had the last of the frost. I also have an evergreen clematis which should flower Mar/Apr and that too has a few brown leaves. Our garden is built on the site of an old farmyard and we had lots of sandstone blocks in the garden and the garden is raised at the back so after years of persuading OH, we got this area turned into the patio, incorporating the sandstone blocks. I was really pleased with the result, and we spent ages planting etc...I just kept picking up plants from the local supermarket - usually off the "nearly dead" shelf, so I´ve got my fingers crossed they´ve all survived. I think Rosie means frogs mating, Charlotte. Some of the birds are collecting twigs, moss etc so I guess they think it´s spring. 15 Mar 2010 00:04 I had some snowdrops up a few weeks ago which i had forgotten about, what does the frogs "getting married" mean? 14 Mar 2010 22:51 That´s great Rourkey. Some plants I was hoping would be saved from the winter look like dead twigs but I´ll leave them; they might sprout!! I noticed bluebell leaves poking through the soil today (in the garden). They must be very confused - it´s too cold & too early. 14 Mar 2010 21:49 I too have some crocuses coming up and the local chuchyard is full of snowdrops...they look lovely. Also, I´m pleased to say the climbing hydrangea I planted last year is now just getting little leaf buds on it, so at least I know it´s survived the snow/frost. 14 Mar 2010 14:38 I had ONE crocus Charlotte but it´s disappeared. Think the frost saw it off.....! Snowdrops locally are at their best now which is about 5 weeks later than usual. Caught 2 frogs ´getting married´ in the pond yesterday but think it was only a ´practice run´.... They´ve gone down to the bottom again now. |
