RSPCA calls for stunning at all abattoirs

Australia´s animal welfare lobby wants federal politicians to turn their attention to factory farming and live exports.

The RSPCA has launched its election platform, calling for live exports to be phased out, truthful labels on humanely farmed food, and an end to the intensive farming of dogs in puppy factories.

CEO Heather Neil says the RSPCA also wants every Australian abattoir to stun livestock before slaughter.

"What we now understand is that there are many thousands of animals who are being slaughtered to meet the requirements of many groups," she says.

"And those animals have an exemption from being stunned.

"We believe that is unacceptable on animal welfare grounds, and the religious requirements of those particular groups can be met in other ways."

The red meat industry says pre-slaughter stunning is common practice in most Australian abattoirs.

When I first read the headlines I thought, Ye Gods- The rs have grown a backbone and are coming out against halal/kosher killings. Noo. you dashed my dreams, its the Australian rs thats got the backbone after all. We can only hope that this country follows suit asap. All animals should be prestunned FULLSTOP. Meat must be labelled so the consumer can make an informed choice. With modern Fridge vehicles etc there is no need for live exports. In relation to puppy farms, well the sooner they are condemned, the better. Finally, come on rs, grow a backbone and start defending the farm animals welfare against the pressure of minority groups.
