Discussion started by: | Discussion > Halal. The truth is out, at lastOver the weekend and in to days Daily Express- Shock, Horror. We are buying Halal meat from pub chains to hospitals. I have to ask where these companies think the demand has come from? Muslims do not partake of alcohol, at least thats what they say. So, if they don´t go in pubs or restaurants why do the owners NEED to buy halal meat? It seems that this type of slaughter is not JUST for "religious" purposes, its a means of making money at the expense of the consumer yet again. How long before the traditional methods are replaced entirely because the supermarkets are bound to jump on the bandwagon for cheaper products. Animal Welfare in the UK is being set back many years due to this "religious" dicat. Comments Post a comment in this discussion: 04 Oct 2010 14:32 i saw something about this on watchdog the other night (think it was watchdog) saying that most of our supermarket chains sell halal meat without labeling it so, which made me really angry. but they then went on to say that all of this meat (with the exception of that sold in SUBWAY) was in fact stunned before slaughter (which is my main problem with halal meat, ie that it is not stunned). i still believe that they should clearly label meat that is halal - we surely have a right to know what we are buying. they also said that most NZ lamb is halal. was shocked to hear that the meat in SUBWAY is "proper" halal though, ie NOT STUNNED before slaughter. won´t be buying from there again...and i don´t even eat meat! glad morrison have confirmed that their meat is non halal as that is where hubby buys most of his meat. don´t suppose we know where M&S stand on halal? i try to encourage my hubby to buy meat etc in there as none of it is factory farmed but have no idea what their policy is re halal. 02 Oct 2010 02:01 Member Removed its all part of the transformation to an islamic society...baby steps..but steps none the less. islam is spreading however and where ever it can. its not just there, but here as well. 26 Sep 2010 09:43 Just had an email from Morrisons who confirmed that their meat is all non halal with the exception of query NZ lamb. Still awaiting a reply from Sainburys but think there may have been a problem with the orginal email. (see, I can be fair) 21 Sep 2010 10:17 Tina, I could take you to an NHS Trust, which I worked for, that has a notice in their canteen that ALL meat is halal yet the patients are not advised of that fact. Also, why has the EU taken steps to introduce Halal labelling as mandatory. Yes, Tina I know newspapers love to gloss up stories but maybe we should all go into a Whitbreads pub, order a T-bone steak with all its trimmings and when its delivered to the table ask if its halal and if so reject it as not acceptable. Also, as previously reported on this club, the largest Halal slaughterhouse in the UK has just opened. This is big business, not religion. 20 Sep 2010 22:23 From the Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/apr/05/france-muslims-halal-boom The last para says it all....... 20 Sep 2010 18:54 Member Removed Am not saying its not true, but the Daily Express have been known to print lies before, so until there is solid proof, I am not going to believe that halal meat is being sold in pubs/hospitals. 20 Sep 2010 18:52 Find this totally disgusting, the things id like to say unfortunately i cant, why do we pander to every nationality´s needs, when should be concentrating more on our own country´s needs it really ------ me off. l do want to know how the meat i eat is killed, 20 Sep 2010 18:34 What happened to freedom of choice?? If consumers were TOLD that a premises meat was sourced from a Halal butcher they could choose whether to eat there or not... I, for one, would not. I believe that all animals - whether as companion animals or a source of food - should have a life as dictated by the Five Freedoms. Why are Halal butchers exempt from these?? If people choose to live here fine, but dont start bending the rules... As regards the named ´outlets´, apart from the NHS Trusts, the others are drinking & gambling establishments... Correct me if I´m wrong, but arent followers of the Muslim faith forbidden to do either??? If people want Halal meat in Great Britain, it should be slaughtered abroad & sent over as ´oven ready´... I will never support the ´ritual slaughter´ of animals but with Ministers who pander to the whims of every minority group under the sun, it will probably have a law of its own eventually. Yet, if I were to go and kill my pet lamb in the garden with a carving knife I´d be prosecuted, & rightly so. How come our laws only protect some animals & not all??? Without a doubt the animals were reared in this country so why should they face the Halal butcher & not be despatched by the proper methods?? As Eric said, animal welfare in this country is being set back decades with this practice. The thought that I may have eaten meat slaughtered in this way, makes me feel nauseous. Animal suffering = better meat? I dont think so. 20 Sep 2010 13:46 In addition.... Amongst the many places that only use halal meat, including NHS Trusts, are Ascot Race Course, Twickenham & Wembley Stadiums, and Whitbreads the Pub/Restaurant chain. This info taken from the Daily Express acticle. Interesting to note that the Express is not inviting comments on its website regarding the articles, I wonder why? |
