Frozen ponds

After all the freezing weather this week, I went to check on the pond. All the wildlife in it should be dormant and/or hibernating by now.
Imagine the shock I got when I spotted a fully grown frog apparently frozen in the ice.
I poured warm water on the ice to free him & took him inside. His little toes were bright pink & I thought he was dead until he opened one eye..
After getting advice from an expert, I filled a box with leaves from the garden & popped him in there. He revived enough to bury himself down in the leaves.
The next day there were 2 more frogs in the ice & today another one..
The box is getting a bit crowded now but they all seem fine.
The box is in the shed which is freezing but sheltered. They have to be kept cold so that their metabolism shuts right down.
All being well, they will survive til Spring when they can return home..

All frogs doing well to date......all snuggled down.

Was going to put some mealworms in for them in case they got peckish but my friend Andrew (a zoologist) said I shouldnt feed them at all because, as their metabolism has slowed right down, the food would rot in their tummys before it was digested.
So that´s a good tip - dont feed outdoor frogs in the winter.

All froggies are alive & well - snuggled down in the leaves. Have some mealworms on standby in case we get a mild spell & the frogs ´wake up´ hungry.
