Halal labelling

Please keep an eye on the new EU legislation regarding the labelling of halal meat. One report said the the EU were "dropping it", another said "it wasnt discussed therefore not included in the report". It appears that New Zealand are back tracking on their stance as well. The consumer must have the right to know how the meat/ product was obtained and it is them who must make a choice to buy or not, and the suppliers must abide by that. As I´ve said many times before, it is NOT a religious observence any more its about making cheap profit at the animals/ consumers expense.

Rosie, Don´t get me started over that Iraqi! I´ve written to MP telling him exactly what I think of the situation and laying the blame at his feet (he was for a while a "government" minister). The only way Halal can be justified must be on cost grounds so where do they save money. I know the establishments would only keep 1 type of meat as opposed to 2 but why should non muslims have it inflicted on them without any warning. So I come back to my original statement of months ago, its not religion, its money.

This country drives me mad in that it bends over backwards to accommodate all other cultures & doesnt defend the rights of its own people.
Absolutely agree Christine - we should have the choice.
We ought to play the ´Human Rights´ card... everyone else does & ends up getting what they want.

I was reading only yesterday about a failed asylum seeker who had no driving licence or insurance yet was driving a car that killed a child. His punishment?? He´s now been allowed to stay in this country......
How can that be justice?

I am absolutely steadfast on this halal issue. If I dont know where the meat came from, I wont buy it. End of.
Why all the secrecy anyway?? Are the halal butchers ashamed of their trade??

the individual must have a free choice in the way they choose their meet they eat the way the muslims kill their food is horrable the poor lamb or hen to be hung upside and have its throat cut and to expect us to eat it is wrong.if they live in our country they abide by our laws not theres they do not try to make there laws ours. the eu to try and cover this are wrong .we have a basic right to choose what we eat and the way it is killed they live here they abide by that.

Trouble is most in this country just stand back and accept it, we need all the people who are against this to stand and be heard, l think its disgusting.

Rosie, Agree with everything you raised. I think its time the "big business" brotherhood to get a dose of reality. If we all stopped buying meat and ready made meals from supermarkets it would be a start. Go to your local butcher and ask him how the meat was obtained. Most small local butchers pride themselves on having traditional local raised & slaughtered meat for sale. Unlike the supermarkets, the small business man could not afford to tell mis truths, his livlihood depends on his reputation. Sooner or later the big combines will realise that their meat sales are down as well as their profits and thats where it will hurt them, in the pocket. How did we ever get into this mess in the first place? If you emigrate you should be prepared to integrate, not demand things that are alien to your host country. Animal Welfare MUST override any religious/ money making scams.

This very thing is under Pete Wedderburns blog on the front page of PS Eric. The EU have backtracked saying it´s not necessary to label whether meat is halal or not.

I totally agree. This is about animal welfare not religious beliefs. Interestingly, a leading Muslim based in London has stated that the Koran states that all animals must have a peaceful, pain free death so stunning isnt a ´sin´. It´s the way some fundamentalists interpret it.
What bothers me more is the fact that the EU, New Zealand & possibly others have back tracked on this. All these countries have strict animal welfare laws and a ´special case´ is being made of a ´minority´ group. Are we losing the thread here. Is it Christians who are now the minority? I think ALL Christian countries should unite & say abide by our animal welfare laws or modify halal slaughter to include pre-stunning.
It´s not right that animals that have led a happy life in the countryside of Britain should end their lives in fear, distress & pain.
What´s more, if they insist on not labelling, I shall buy organic locally that is reared & slaughtered on the farm. Failing that, I shall become a vegetarian.
The same as Muslims cannot eat non-halal meat, I cannot eat halal. Works both ways.
