Are dogs offensive?![]() We recently reported that Tayside Police withdrew a crime prevention poster that had a picture of a puppy on it. Apparently they had been tod it was offensive to members of the Muslim community, even though a Muslim community leader suggested the poster was not offensive. Then there was a new story that police dogs would have to wear special bootees when searching Muslim homes. The Kennel Club has now got involved criticising the recent attempt to ban an image of a dog, on the basis of religious sensibilities and insists that dogs are an integral part of British society that cannot simply be swept under the carpet. Caroline Kisko, spokesperson for the Kennel Club, said: "Dogs are an integral part of British society and we do not support any actions which seek to apologise for their existence. “We are surprised that Tayside Police took the decision to withdraw a poster that showed a picture of a puppy when dogs are so important to effective policing. "There is nothing offensive about using an image of a dog on promotional material, which many advertisers and organisations choose to do because of the positive and affectionate feelings that they evoke. "Dog owners are urged to keep their dogs under control as a matter of course, in order to respect individual sensibilities, but we also believe that as many public places as possible should be Open for Dogs and we are running a campaign to this effect. Regarding the bootees they say:- “We have also heard that the Association of Chief Police Officers is considering the introduction of footwear for sniffer dogs when they are searching Muslims’ homes. We would not condone any attempt to make search dogs wear special clothing, which could cause them distress, while they are providing a valuable and worthy service to the community.” I wonder what set this whole business off - i think it might have been an over-sensitive and politically correct Muslim councillor in Dundee, Mohammed Asif, a member of the Tayside Joint Police Board. The Dubai Government is upholding their law, and so they should. The woman only has herself to blame. Why does this country bend so many rules to accomodate non-uk nationals?? If you´re going to live & work abroad, live by their rules. If you cant, dont go there.... 09 Jul 2008 09:43 does anyone know what exactly it is that some muslims have against dogs? its not something i have heard or come across before. i agree with the comments below though. if i were to go and live in another country i would try to fit in and adjust to their cultures and beliefs and if i didn´t agree with those beliefs then i would not chose to live in that country. how come england is bending over backwards to change everything to accommodate other cultures? we are not forcing people to live here. go with the aussies, that´s what i say. *tuts and shakes head and suddenly feels like a bit of an old fogey* haha. 08 Jul 2008 16:55 I have my Tayside Police postcard, complete with image of puppy, happily sitting on my noticeboard in the kitchen hehe Not all Muslims are that way inclined... my brother-in-law is muslim and he´s never said anything about dogs like that councillor did, in fact he gets on great with my lab. I´ll have to ask him about the dog thing when I next see him, but he´s certainly never mentioned anything. I could say more on the subject but won´t as all this pc correctness and ´can´t upset so-and-so´ really does make me mad - I agree with comments below that it would never happen if it was the other way around! I think this country has ´gone to the dogs - excuse the pun ! 08 Jul 2008 16:01 This is political correctness gome mad.. oh wait, I cant say that, its "culturally sensitive"! Even the words "politically correct" arent politically correct. Its just a little dog- dogs are a part of Britain. Do they find the Challenge Churchill adverts offensive too? I´m not racist or anything, but do they expect us to lock our dogs behind bars just because they dont like them? 08 Jul 2008 14:57 Description Also, Mary made a good point. The rescue dogs that fly out to Muslim countries to help locate survivors in disaster areas dont seem to be considered ´dirty´ then, so why the double standards?? Dogs are part of the British way of life so get over it Mr ´Councillor´ from Tayside 08 Jul 2008 14:54 Description The Australians have this sort of thing sussed..... They say that they are a democratic country with laws to protect people & customs going back hundreds of years. Anyone who wants to live there is welcome, PROVIDED they observe the law like everyone else & dont expect to be treated any differently because of colour, religion etc If they are expecting to get special treatment then the Aussies respectfully suggest they go elsewhere!! I´m not racist either but the phrase ´live & let live´ has to work both ways & sometimes I feel like a stranger in my own country. I blame the namby pamby government...........!! 08 Jul 2008 11:15 I was having this conversation with some regulars down my local on Sunday afternoon, when we got talking about the UK and cultures, etc, etc. One bloke actually made a very good point, regarding this story and that is...these Muslim countries are happy to have our sniffer dogs and rescue dogs, when they suffer from natural disasters and war´s,etc..but they take offence to having dog´s on advertising, promotional boards in this country and consider the animal offensive. NOW I am NOT RACIST at all.....let that be made clear..BUT IF such people do not like us having dogs and using them in promotional ways as well as having them directly near, then perhaps they should reconsider their position within our Country.....sorry,but this whole thing and other similar stories really rile me and it´s no wonder,so many people are beginning to feel animous towards certain groups of people. 08 Jul 2008 10:29 l truly believe that Britain has literally ´´Gone to the Dogs´´ This is ridiculous, would Muslims be so accommodating to us in there country ? l don´t think so. We are fast becoming the laughing stock to the rest of Europe. Perhaps there was an overreaction, but even so why do we ponder to there every whim |
