Kilo´s killer on trial

Do you remember the story of Kilo, a tabby employed as ship’s mascot on the Royal Navy museum ship HMS Belfast, moored on the River Thames near London Bridge. He was a rescue from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

Kilo was killed by mindless thugs, about two months ago. The killers were a young man and two young women who seized Kilo as he ambled up the gangplank on his way to his berth and threw him in the River Thames. He could not survive the strong currents and bitterly cold water.

However the three killers were filmed on CCTV.

Now PetStreet´s Natalija Harbinson has let me know that a 16-year-old girl will appear in court charged with animal cruelty on suspicion of throwing Kilo into the Thames. She will appear before Camberwell Youth Court next Wednesday.

Thanks Natalija and please let us know what transpires.

According to the SUN newspaper a DRUNKEN teenage girl who killed a ship’s cat by throwing him into a river was found guilty of animal cruelty yesterday.´ She could face up to six months in jail and she could also be fined up to £25,000.
The girl will be sentenced next month.´ Here is the link for the full story http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/justice/article1850097.ece
I hope the girl gets what´s coming to her....poor Kilo

I´ve hunted high and low searching for the sentence handed out (if she was found guilty) at Camberwell Green Youth Court on Wednesday the 10th of September, but with no success! I will keep searching and see if I can e-mail the Youth Court. They might give me these details but I´m sure I´ll hit a data protection wall...yadda yadda yadda!

unfortunately i think this will just be another cruelty case where the buggers involved just get a slap - especially as the "person" in question is a minor. i would hope that because of kilo´s standing and popularity that this might carry more weight but i doubt it. fingers crossed that i am proved wrong.

maybe she was a cat in past lifes and the cat was the person that killed her cruely so belive the tibetians
there may be reasons why she did that ? mental health problems? stress of some sort?

Description
If the charge is animal cruelty then this person SHOULD be sentenced with the full weight of the Animal welfare Act behind it.
If she isnt, if she DOES only get a slap on the wrist, I shall be writing to my MP AGAIN (!) to ask why the AWA wasnt used. To be fair though, he does answer every letter & chases senior ministers for answers to my questions. I shall definitely be wanting an answer if she gets off scot free.

A gang of unruly teenage bush parrots wrought havoc at a bird sanctuary in New Zealand by using their powerful beaks to destroy nesting boxes.
The native Kaka parrots - juvenile birds that have not reached sexual maturity - have torn off nesting box doors and vandalised the bird homes, sanctuary conservation officer Matt Robertson said.
sounds like some of the kids who walk in packs in this neighboorhood the wild hoodies!!
well humans are at the top of the food chain and rule the animal kingdom and act in what appears to be a primeval manner and all that talk about being civilized
yeah right!!!
will not be soon now before the elderly too are put out to freeze to death by the looks of it
if as a society we do not care for the vunarable and think of ourselves in the same league as the other animals but on top then we have not changed a bit since we came out of caves but surely we have
to be kind is a lot tougher to most it seems sadly !!

yeah but paula, i think if it was caught on cctv it would be different. i think even with the case of kilo, it will be a slap on the wrists, bit of community service and a £25 fine. i thought this animal health and welfare act had some sort of promise of justice for animal cruelty?

well at least this one made it to the news and if the people involved get some sort of punishment then maybe it will make to the national papers which in turn will have people thinking twice about doing these things in front of cameras
an act of cowardice
not a very noble soul.....

Will do! I have been following this story closely as Battersea Dog & Cats home rehomer, Ros Davies, gave me my cat Luca (originally called Ridley) in March this year. Ros gave HMS Belfast brothers Kilo and Oscar (school children named them). Sadly, Oscar is also missing- he went looking for his brother and never came back. We are hoping he is ok and has found refuge somewhere. There were 3 people in the CCTV image and it appears the woman threw Kilo overboard and thus has been charged with animal cruelty. We´ll have to see if she´s convicted next week and what the sentence will be. Personally, I think the only fitting sentence would be community service at Battersea and a personal apology to Ros Davies and the other staff in the Battersea cattery along with an apology to the crew of HMS Belfast. She should then be made to work in the cattery and gain some empathy for animals and realise that Battersea cats are especially vulnerable because many suffered in the past. Perhaps a community service order at an animal charity is the only way for her to understand the error of her ways. The other two in the CCTV images were not charged (probably because they did not throw the cat overboard physically).
My Battersea cat is a real gem. Luca did not cry at all all the way down to Kingston from Battersea and settled in really well...naturally he was a little scared and I had to keep him away from my resident cat, Rocco. Now, ´the boys´ love each other and Rocco even grooms Luca (licking him like crazy)....I am proud to have helped a Battersea cat and the ladies in the cattery there really do want the best for all the cats there. They are wonderful people.
