This cat had been in a fight and had developed a huge cat bite abscess on his cheek. It burst and left this massive hole in the side of his face. It was about 3cm in diameter. The brown/grey tissue in the bottom half of the hole is dead skin, the pink area above this is exposed cheek muscle and the light pink area above that is exposed facial bone! The small white band you can see just poking into the wound at the top is a torn bit of nerve.

His eye is green and his nose yellow as the eye on this side was very sore and this coloured dye checks for ulcers and scratches on the eyes surface.

He was given pain relief and anti-biotics for this injury, and healed very well. We couldn´t stitch it up as there was not enough spare skin to close over the hole. Check out the rest of the pictures in the album to see how well he did!

The healing power of the body never ceases to amaze me!

One of my old cats had an abscess burst on his back leg - there was a really big hole - you could have put your hand in - you could see muscle underneath. The vet managed to slightly close the wound - but left some open to drain and dry out - which still left a big hole that dried up and healed over in a couple of weeks.
